Allen Academy of Dance Arts is a relatively new dance academy in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. We had a chance to speak with Beth Allen-Motzel, Artistic Director of Allen Academy of Dance Arts to learn more about her studio and background.
Can you tell us a little bit about the history of Allen Academy of Dance Arts?
AADA was founded in September 2016. I found a need to open a positive and nurturing environment with an encouraged disciplined study.
Can you expand on your own dance experience? What classes do you teach?
I am classically trained in ballet and jazz. I have been awarded with scholarships in NYC and have been teaching ballet and jazz since age 14. I was invited to teach on Broadway and for NYCB summer school for the arts. I currently teach classical ballet-pointe and jazz.
Can you tell us more about your adult classes? What types of classes do you offer for adults and seniors?
My adult classes range in levels and are based on stretching and strengthening in a fun environment. My senior classes vary based on ability. We typically start on the barre, move to chair work using bands, and end class with fun center movement.
Do you have any advice for dancers just starting out? What classes do you recommend starting with?
All dancers starting out should study ballet which educates technique alignment and the language of dance which will remain a constant all throughout the study. I started dancing at the age of three. I remember fighting my mom to go and would run and hide when it was time to go. I am grateful she persisted!
What is the importance of community in your academy?
Dance is and always will be a universal language and beautiful art! Dancers grow with a confidence of self awareness and success. The benefits of dancing are endless. I believe all are capable of learning and enjoying the art of dance if taught in a nurturing environment that builds self esteem and confidence.
