We spoke with Jen Kremer of Sweet Freedom Bakery in Collingswood, NJ about Sweet Freedom’s unique story, and their committment to bake and serve delicious baked goods that are allergen-free!
What is the history behind Sweet Freedom bakery?
Allison Lubert created Sweet Freedom Bakery in 2009 and opened the first location on South Street in January 2010. Being sensitive to many foods, she realized there was a need for things that are free of all the top 8 allergens and not just free of some things here or there.
What was the inspiration to open an allergy-friendly bakery?
In trying to satisfy her own cravings, Allison realized that the products on the market just weren’t great and she wanted to find a way to offer more to those who cannot go to a “normal” bakery.
How did you make the decision to expand to three stores? Also, specifically how did you decide to open a store in Collingswood?
After successfully getting the South Street location up and running I took over the day to day operations and we began expanding. Now we have 3 bustling locations. Collingswood seemed to be a practical move. Our close proximity to Center City makes it easy to share employees, the town of Collingswood is adorable and walkable and therefore there is a great amount of foot traffic.
The Borough of Collingswood offers great support to small businesses and is very active in promoting business. It saves a trip from NJ (and that toll) to those that don’t want to go “all the way” to the city for treats. We LOVE Collingswood. Bryn Mawr we opened only 6 months behind Collingswood. That was ROUGH, but fun!! For the same reasons. The MainLiners ALSO don’t want to always have to drive to the city and Bryn Mawr is walkable and unique. We always look for properties that have uniqueness and fun offerings so that our guests can enjoy our neighbors as much as they enjoy us. We ARE a destination for many, so it’s a win-win.
What is your favorite part of working at the bakery?
Working for Sweet Freedom Bakery is the most rewarding job I have ever had. To help a mom, nearly in tears, because her child can finally have a birthday cake or walk into a bakery and chose anything they want, is very special. To tell a kid that whatever they want is safe for them feels good and brightens your day tremendously. To make items that taste good and are adorable is so very fun.
What are your favorite items on your menu?
We make the best doughnuts you will EVER eat. They are baked, not fried, so you can have as many as you want!!
Anything I missed that you want to add?
Everything we make is free of: gluten, corn, soy, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (with the exception of coconut) and refined sugars. We are also certified Kosher and we don’t use any synthetic dyes. We are passionate and creative and love what we are able to create.
